WASHINGTON D.C. — The United States Supreme Court struck down a federal law that had prohibited single-game gambling in most of the country.
The judges determined that the law unconstitutionally imposed prohibitions upon the individual states.
Since that landmark court decision in May, four states have joined Nevada in passing legislation to make gambling legal: New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia and Mississippi.
Three other states have taken legal steps to be able to offer gambling soon as well: Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New York.
Nearly two dozen other states have introduced but not yet passed legislation that would work toward legalizing gambling in their jurisdictions.
According to Bloomberg, Americans bet between $50 and $150 billion per year on sports outside of Las Vegas.
The Supreme Court majority (6-3 vote) struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, saying it violated the U.S. Constitution’s 10th Amendment.
According to the New York Times, “Placing bets will be done on mobile devices, fueled and endorsed by the lawmakers and sports officials who opposed it for so long. A trip to Las Vegas to wager on March Madness or the Super Bowl could soon seem quaint.”
