Weekly Sports Recap & Update – April 9th Edition

Now that the men’s and women’s NCAA Basketball tournaments are over, the sports weekends seem a little empty. Over the past three weeks our weekends have been spent glued to the TV watching for the next Cinderella story to advance, or for the next buzzer beater. However, as the college basketball season ends, anticipation for the next big sporting event begins. The weekend following the NCAA men’s basketball championship game always brings us “A Tradition Unlike Any Other”. That’s right, it’s Masters Weekend. We’ll be ready to listen to another weekend full of Jim Nantz. With the Masters, Major League Baseball, NBA action, and some NASCAR events, there’ll be plenty of action to fill the void of college basketball.

Top Sports Events for This Weekend – Apr.  10 –  Apr. 11

The Masters – PGA Tour

This weekend, the world’s top golfers will ascend upon Augusta National for the biggest tournament in golf, The Masters. Dustin Johnson will be back to defend his crown, and Johnson is once again playing at a very high level. Jordan Spieth is coming off of a victory at the Valero Texas Open last weekend, breaking a four year winless drought. Bryson DeChambeau is one of the longest hitters on the tour, and if he can keep the ball in the fairway, and his putter doesn’t let him down, he has a great shot at being in contention on Sunday. One golfer who will be missed this weekend is Tiger Woods. After being involved in a serious car accident a few weeks ago, and going through multiple surgeries, Woods is not yet able to play. The Masters always brings out some of the best golf to watch, so we should see some great action throughout the weekend.

MLB

This weekend’s Major League Baseball action is full of divisional matchups. The New York Yankees will be taking on the Tampa Bay Rays, and any time that these two teams get together, there always seems to be some sort of fireworks. The Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on the Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia owned Atlanta in their season-opening series, so we’ll see if Atlanta has some payback in mind. These two teams should be the class of the National League East division.

NBA

In NBA action, we’ll see the Los Angeles Lakers head east to take on the Brooklyn Nets. On most nights this would be a premier matchup, but both teams have been riddled by injuries. LeBron James and Anthony Davis won’t be playing for the Lakers, while James Harden won’t play for the Nets. We could however see the return of Kevin Durant for the Nets. Durant hasn’t played in nearly two months, so NBA fans would love to see Durant on the court again.

NASCAR

The NASCAR circuit travels to Virginia to the Martinsville Speedway. On Friday night the Xfinity racers will run the Cook Out 250. On Saturday night, the NASCAR Cup Series race will be the Blue Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500. This one will be under the lights, so that will add a little intrigue to one of the toughest speedways on the circuit.
