Weekly Sports Recap & Update – May 7th Edition

It’s Mother’s Day weekend, but that doesn’t stop the sports world. This weekend is full of some very good sporting events. As the baseball season is just over 20% of the way done, and the NBA is making its way to the end of the regular season, we’re seeing some good matchups. The PGA Tour event this weekend will have a great field; we’ve got a great boxing matchup, and how can we forget this weekend’s NASCAR event? Let’s take a look at the top sporting events for the upcoming weekend.

Betting Action: Weekly Sports Recap & Updates

Top Sports Events for This Weekend – May 8 –  May 9

MLB

In a series that could be a potential playoff matchup, the Tampa Bay Rays will visit the Oakland Athletics. These two teams lack big names, but both of these teams have shown a penchant for playing fundamental baseball and winning games. The A’s are currently leading the American League West after recovering from a horrendous start. The Rays are in third place in the AL East, but they’re just 1 ½ games behind the division-leading, overachieving Boston Red Sox.

NBA

As the NBA regular season is quickly approaching, teams are making last-ditch efforts to either get into the playoffs, or improve their playoff positioning. Saturday’s premier matchup will feature the Brooklyn Nets traveling to Denver to take on the Nuggets. The Nuggets are currently tied for third in the Western Conference playoff race with the Los Angeles Clippers. Nikola Jokic is likely going to win the NBA MVP award, and he has helped spur the Nuggets up the Western Conference standings, albeit without the services of Jamal Murray. Brooklyn is still missing James Harden, but Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant are getting into playoff form. This should be a great matchup between two teams that could meet in this year’s NBA Finals.

Golf

The famed Quail Hollow course will host this weekend’s Wells Fargo Championship. This tournament will have the feel of a major championship, as this is one of the most loaded fields outside of a major on tour this season. Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Jason Day, Tony Finau, Justin Thomas, and Viktor Hovland will all be playing in this event. After a bit of a lull in the PGA schedule, the Wells Fargo Championship represents a return to some big-time golf.

Boxing

AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be the site of this weekend’s huge boxing matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders. Alvarez will continue on his quest to become the first undisputed world super middleweight champion in boxing history. Alvarez is currently the WBA, WBC, and The Ring super middleweight champ. Saunders holds the WBO title, so the winner will hold every major championship with the exception of the IBF title. The winner of this bout will more than likely set their sights on Caleb Plant, the current IBF super middleweight titleholder.

NASCAR

We’ll see the rare Saturday afternoon NASCAR Cup Series race as the circuit travels to Darlington Raceway in South Carolina for the Goodyear 400. Since Mother’s Day is Sunday, NASCAR always takes that day off. Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, and Martin Truex Jr. are the favorites to take home the checkered flag.
