Weekly Sports Recap & Update – June 15th Edition

A lot went down this past week. Sports came back big time. The PGA Tour had their first tournament since the shutdown. NASCAR handed out another trophy. UFC put on another great show, and two soccer leagues, Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A, returned to the pitch. Check it out!

Weekly Sports Recap & Update – June 15th Edition

Berger beats Morikawa for PGA Charles Schwab title

On Sunday, Daniel Berger beat Colin Morikawa in a playoff to take the Charles Schwab Challenge trophy. Both golfers shot a -15.

Because the Charles Schwab was the first PGA Tournament since the shutdown, plenty of talented golfers showed up. That includes Bryson DeChambeau who finished tied for third with Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, and Jason Kokrak.

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth finished tied for tenth with a -11. Rory McIlroy finished tied for thirty-second with a -6.

This week is the RBC Heritage. We don’t know which golfers will tee it off at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head.

In two weeks is the prestigious Travelers. So, don’t expect everyone to make the trip to South Carolina this week.

Hamlin wins the NASCAR Dixie Vodka 400

Team Gibbs is unbeatable. Last Wednesday, Martin Truex Jr. won at Martinsville. This past Sunday, Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag at Homestead in Miami.

Denny’s win makes it 3-of-8 for Joe Gibbs Racing. Kevin Harvick has won a couple of times. So has Brad Keselowski. Chase Elliott won the NASCAR Cup Series at Charlotte 310 on May 27.

That means, Keselowski, Harvick and Hamlin each have a couple of wins. Elliott and Truex Jr. each have a victory.

Drivers like Harvick and Keselowski could continue to win races. It’s more likely, though, that Gibbs Racing gets even stronger from here. Their top driver, last year NASCAR Cup winner Kyle Busch, has yet to get it going.

It’s a matter of time before that happens. What’s more interesting about what happened on Sunday is how none of the favorites got into the Top 5.

Race favorite Kevin Harvick finished twenty-sixth. Kyle Busch finished sixth, and Brad Keselowski finished tenth.

The top 5 were Hamlin, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick, and Aric Almirola.

What happens in the GEICO 500 at Talladega on Sunday? It’s anyone’s guess.

Calvillo beats Eye in UFC Fight Night main event

In one of the more entertaining headliners of the year, Cynthia Calvillo beat Jessica Eye via 5-round unanimous decision. Calvillo landed 150-of-294 strikes. Eye connected on 70-of-283 strikes.

Calvillo was also great at getting Eye to the mat. She was good on 4-of-7 take down attempts. Calvillo went up in weight. She is tenth on the strawweight rankings. She wasn’t even ranked in the flyweight division.

Because Jessica Eye was ranked first, it makes sense for Dana to consider a championship bout between Calvillo and flyweight champion Valentina Schevchenko.

Check out other results on the main card.

  • Marvin Vettori via submission over Karl Roberson
  • Charles Rosa via split-decision against Kevin Aguilar
  • Andre Fili via split-decision versus Charles Jourdain
  • Jordan Espinosa via unanimous decision against Mark De La Rosa
  • Mariya Agapova via submission against Hannah Cifers

This Saturday’s UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Volkov happens at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. So far so good with UFC’s intention to have fights at their facility in Sin City.

In addition to Curtis Blaydes taking on Alexander Volkov, 15-2 Josh Emmett throws down against 13-1 Shane Burgos and Raquel Pennington steps into the Octagon to face Marion Reneau.

Juventus-AC Milan, Napoli-Internazionale draw in Italian Coppa Italia matches

Italian Serie A matches didn’t officially take place last week. But the Italian Coppa Italia did have a couple of matches between four Serie A squads.

In the first match, on Friday, Juventus and AC Milan drew 0-0. Both teams appeared sluggish. That’s what happened to Bundesliga squads when they first hit the pitch.

The second Italian Coppa Italia match this weekend, Napoli against Internazionale, also ended in a draw. But while AC and Juve blanketed each other, Napoli and Internazionale each scored a goal.

Serie A restarts this weekend. On Saturday, Torino battles Parma and Hellas Verona takes on Cagliari. Then on Sunday, Atalanta throws down against Sassuolo and Internazionale hits the pitch against Sampdoria.

Barcelona makes return to pitch a winning one

Lionel Messi and Barcelona made their return to the pitch a winning one. Messi scored a goal in the 4-0 thrashing Barca put onto Mallorca. Jordi Alba, Martin Braithwaite, and Arturo Vidal also scored goals.

Real Madrid beat Eibar 3-1. Atletico Madrid drew with Atletico Bilbabo 1-1.

Although Barcelona looked great, they remain just 2 points ahead of Real. The La Liga title could come down to the final match day.

Bayern continues Bundesliga roll

While Real and Barca should battle it out for the La Liga Championship, Bayern has rolled to an insurmountable lead in the Bundesliga.

Bayern beat Monchengladbach 2-1 on Saturday. Bayern now has a 7-point lead over Dortmund. No way Dortmund catches Bayern in the Bundesliga.

The same can be said for Liverpool in the English Premier League. The EPL starts back up on Wednesday, June 17 when Aston Villa takes on Sheffield United and Manchester City battles Arsenal.

Nobody will catch Pool, who has a 25-point lead over Man City, but it doesn’t matter. English Premier League soccer is back!

Shakur Stevenson, Jessie Magdaleno win as boxing returns to the U.S.

La Liga and Serie A soccer weren’t the only restarts last week. For the first time since the shutdown, pugilists headed to the ring.

On Tuesday, June 9, Shakur Stevenson knocked out Felix Caraballo with a devastating body shot in that card’s main event. Stevenson controlled the fight from the outset. He landed the bout ending blow in Round 6.

A couple of days later on June 11, the ref had to disqualify Yenifel Vicente after he repeatedly hit Jessie Magdaleno below the belt.

This week, ESPN has a couple of more fight cards on June 16 and June 18. Check out odds on MyBookie.

Have a great week!
