U.S. battles England in 2019 Women’s World Cup Semifinal on July 2

Last Friday, July 28, the United States knocked out home team France by a 2-1 score. The U.S. battles another top soccer squad on Tuesday, July 2 when they take on England. England dominated Norway 3-0 in their quarterfinals match the day before the U.S. advanced.

The English will test the United States. They’ve yielded only 1 goal during the Women’s World Cup and that was in their first group match against Scotland. They’ve gotten better and better. If the U.S. wants to advance to the finals, they had better play their best on both sides of the pitch on Tuesday.

In the other two quarterfinals matches, Sweden beat Germany 2-1 and the Netherlands took down Italy 2-0. The Swedes battle the Dutch for the right to advance to the finals.

2019 Copa America and Gold Cup Semifinals also set

Like the Women’s World Cup, the Cop America Semifinals and the Gold Cup Semifinals are also set. At the Copa America, Brazil battles Argentina on Tuesday while Chile takes on Peru on Wednesday.

Brazil-Argentina could be a classic. Many soccer handicappers and fans had put a fork into the Argentinians after their 0-2 loss to Colombia in their first group match. Since then, Argentina has played well enough to make it to the semifinals. They face a major test versus host team Brazil on July 2, though.

In the Gold Cup, it’s Mexico-Haiti and Jamaica-USA. Mexico should easily get by Haiti, but the United States could only squeak by Curacao 1-0. The U.S. must step it up if they wish to face rival Mexico in the finals.

Wimbledon Rounds 1 through 3 this week

Wimbledon round 1 through 3 take place this week. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic hit the grass courts on Monday morning a major favorite. At the time of this writing Djokovic was on his way to a 3-set victory over Philipp Kohlschrieber.

On the women’s side, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, and Petra Martic had already advanced out of the first round. Make sure to keep checking the MyBookie blog for updated analysis and picks for Wimbledon Round 1 and Wimbledon Round 3 this week.

Yankees beat rival Red Sox in barn burners in the UK on Saturday and Sunday

This weekend, the United Kingdom got to see a battle between two of the most storied teams in any American sport, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The two AL East rival battled it out at London Stadium on Sunday with the Yankees coming out ahead 12-8.

Although the score was crazy, it wasn’t nearly as crazy as in the game on Saturday when the Yankees and Red Sox combined for 6 runs each in the first inning. The Yankees beat Boston 17-13 on Saturday. What’s the reason for so many runs? The left field and right field lines at London Stadium are 330 ft. The centerfield straightaway is 385 ft. Although London Stadium had a 16-ft wall going straight up in centerfield, it didn’t matter.

New York and Boston hitters launched home runs all day.

Vanderbilt wins the College World Series

In other baseball news, the Vanderbilt Commodores beat the Michigan Wolverines 8-2 on June 27 in Game 3 to win the 2019 College World Series. The championship is the Commodores second since 2014.

Vanderbilt is now the unquestioned current top college baseball program in the NCAA. The Commodores were preseason favorites to win the College World Series. They didn’t disappoint. Vanderbilt most likely will go into next season the favorites again.

So far, no NHL team has signed Sergei Borbovsky or Artemi Panerin

The Rangers are looking to sign forward Artemi Panerin away from the Columbus Blue Jackets. So far, that hasn’t happened. Neither Panerin nor goalie Sergei Borbovsky have fled Columbus for different teams.

The Blue Jackets took a hit on Monday morning, though, when another one of their other top free agents, center Matt Duchene, said he’s signing with the Nashville Predators. If Columbus loses both Borbovsky and Panerin this week, the 2019 Eastern Conference Semifinal participants could be in some trouble this season.

NBA Free Agency: Kawhi Leonard remains on the market while KD and Kyrie hook up in Brooklyn

NBA Free Agency has already been a boon for the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are the big winners, so far, after making deals for both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Durant must undergo rehab to repair a busted ankle. When he’s healthy, he and Irving should provide fireworks at the Barclay’s Center.

The other top free agent, Kawhi Leonard, has yet to decide where he’s going. Leonard met with the Lakers, Clippers, and Raptors over the weekend. Kawhi might decide to stay with Toronto. If he doesn’t, there’s a huge chance he goes with the Clippers. The only problem with playing with the Clippers is that he won’t get to hit the court with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

An interesting deal happened between the Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets. The Nets traded De’Angelo Russell to Golden State. Russell is a very good, young, point-guard. Golden State will try and play Russell at Durant’s position. That will give them four excellent ball-handlers on the court once Klay Thompson comes back from his injury: Draymond Green, Russell, Steph Curry, and Thompson.

We can’t write off the Warriors to win the 2020 NBA Championship just because they lost Durant to the Nets. At least, not unless the Lakers pull off a coup and Kawhi ends up in Hollywood.

Have a great week!
