Gerrit Cole Redeems Himself, Astros Take 3-2 World Series Lead

After dropping the first two games in the 2019 World Series, it sure looked as if the Houston Astros might get swept. Nothing seemed to phase the Washington Nationals. But, then, the series switched to D.C. and the real Houston Astros showed up.

What changed? How did the Astros turn the Fall Classic around with 3 big road wins? The Astros cleared their heads and just played baseball again. Houston hadn’t played relaxed during the entire postseason. They seemed on edge in every game against both the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS and the New York Yankees in the ALCS.

In the first two World Series matchups, the Astros were on edge again. They didn’t seem comfortable at all versus fired up Washington. They stranded batters in scoring position. Both aces, Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander, pitched nervously. That’s why Houston failed.

In D.C., a different Astros team showed up. They played more loose and didn’t try to send each pitch to the rafters. Gerrit Cole threw a fantastic Game 5. A.J. Hinch managed every game in Washington with an eye on the win, not worrying about what might happen, and only worrying about what was happening.

The Astros can end Washington’s dream in Game 6. They should because Justin Verlander, the only pitcher to lose his first 5 starts in the World Series, takes the mound. Verlander, like Cole in Game 5, will be ready to make amends.

NBA: Lakers, Clippers are For Real While Golden State Has Problems

After a couple of weeks, the Hollywoodland teams are doing just fine. The Lakers and Clippers are both at 2-1. Although plenty of teams in the NBA are at 2-0, let’s not kid ourselves. The Lake Show and the Sailboats should battle each other all season long because 4 of the Top 10 players in the Western Conference: LeBron, Anthony Davis, Kawhi, and Paul George, play for either the Lakers or Clippers.

One preseason favorite that won’t right their sinking ship any time soon are the Golden State Warriors. Steph Curry appears to be on an island now that Kevin Durant is in New Jersey and Klay Thompson is hurt. Draymond Green is doing what he does, but he feeds off other players and those other players, including Steph, haven’t played well.

After 2 games, Curry averages 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. Decent but not mind-blowing stats. Unless the Warriors do something drastic, they might not make the playoffs.

NHL: Surprise Teams Leading Atlantic and Pacific Divisions

Over in the NHL the Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oiler are leading their respective divisions. As of Oct. 27, Buffalo is 9-2-1. The Sabres have 19 points, a single point ahead of the favored Boston Bruins in the Atlantic. In the Pacific, Edmonton has an 8-3-1 record. They’ve got 17 points. That’s a point ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights with 16.

Although the likelihood of the Sabres and Oilers keeping this up isn’t great, it wasn’t great for the Calgary Flames last season and they won the Pacific Division. A bigger question is when, or if, the Tampa Bay Lightning will get rolling this season. The preseason Stanley Cup favorites are 5-3-2 and have only 12 points.

Tiger Ties Sam Snead with 82nd PGA Tour Victory

Take that Tiger haters. The greatest golfer in history, Eldrick “Tiger” Woods, won the inaugural ZOZO Championship at +3300 odds over the weekend. Woods took home his eighty-second PGA Tour trophy. The victory tied Sam Snead’s PGA Tour record. One more win, and Woods will own the record all by himself.

It’s only a matter of time before Tiger gets the 83rd victory. He beat a really good group. Rory McIlroy entered as well as Hideki Matsuyama, who finished second, Gary Woodland, and Xander Schauffele. Tiger beat all of them with a -19.

Who knows? 2020 might be Tiger’s year.

College Football: LSU Leapfrogs Alabama to #1 Two Weeks Before Head-to-Head Matchup

LSU beat Auburn 23-20 and leapfrogged Alabama for the top spot in the College Football AP Top 25. Before going crazy over the Tigers from Baton Rouge, let’s put things in perspective. Yes, LSU beat Auburn, a much better team than who Alabama beat, Arkansas. But, Alabama played without Tua Tagovailoa. LSU played with Heisman Trophy favorite Joe Burrow.

More importantly, neither Bama nor LSU should be ranked ahead of Ohio State. The Buckeyes are undefeated straight up with an 8-0 record. Ohio State is an incredible 7-1 against the spread. From both a football point-of-view, and a betting point-of-view, the Ohio State Buckeyes rule.

NFL: Drew Brees Returns, 49ers Continue Dominating

New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees made his return to action a winning one. Brees threw for 373 yards and 3 touchdowns with only 1 interception in the Saints’ 31-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals. While out with a thumb injury, the Saints had gone 5-0 with Teddy Bridgewater under center. Brees’ return makes New Orleans the top team in the NFC, right?

Not so fast, Niner fans just screamed. San Francisco absolutely decimated the Carolina Panthers 51-13 in Week 8. SF was good for 232 rushing yards. The defense picked Kyle Allen off 3 times. Right now, San Francisco is the best team in the NFC. The Saints and 49ers clash on Dec. 8. Circle the date because it could be the key game this season that determines homefield advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs.

Have a great week!
