Women’s World Cup, Gold Cup, Copa America, NBA Draft, NHL Draft, Wimbledon 2019

What another awesome week in sports. The NBA Draft and NHL Draft both happened this past week. That wasn’t the real story, though. 3 important soccer tournaments are taking place headlined by the Women’s World Cup. Plus, on next Monday, July 1, the 2019 Wimbledon Tournament starts. Check out what happened in sports this past week!

Weekly Sports Update – June 24th Edition

Team USA Looking Strong in Women’s World Cup

The Women’s World Cup rolled into the Round of 16 with the favorites showing no signs of slowing down. Overall tournament favorite USA dominated their group, winning 3 matches with a ridiculous 18 goals. Of course, the United States beat Thailand 13-0 in their first group match. Still, Team USA has proven to be as formidable as the last Women’s World Cup team in 2015.

On Monday, the American bounced Spain by a 2-1 score. Both United State’s goals were via penalty kicks. In the quarterfinals, the Americans take on the French, 2-1 winners over Brazil on Sunday. The match could produce this year’s Women’s World Cup Champion as France was a solid +350 second choice to the United State’s +300 favoritism before the tournament started.

Will France, the host team, bounce the Americans? The match takes place on Friday, June 28. So, make sure to tune in and watch!

Power Teams Dominate in Copa America

Like what’s happening in the Women’s World Cup, the power teams in the 2019 Copa America have also dominated. Colombia put a 3-0 beat down of Argentina in both teams first group match, but Argentina stormed back with a 1-1 draw versus Paraguay and a 2-0 win over Qatar.

Argentina was the only power Copa American squad in danger of not moving to the quarterfinals. Colombia easily won Group B with 9 points, Brazil won Group A with 7, and with a game left to play against Uruguay, Chile is in charge in Group C with 6 points. Uruguay has 4 points in Group C. They’re likely to move on as well.

Mexico, Costa Rica, and the U.S. Move on in Gold Cup

Over in the Gold Cup, Mexico, Costa Rica, and USA are dominating. Mexico won all 3 of their group matches to win Group A. USA and Costa Rica both have 6 points with a group match left to play.

Of those 3 teams, Mexico looks best. They dominated Cuba 7-0 before beating Canada 3-1. They took a backward step in their final group match, a 3-2 win over Martinique, but that might have been because Mexico relaxed some knowing they had a quarterfinals spot locked up. Mexico must be considered the favorites at this point to win the Gold Cup.

Although that’s true, don’t sleep on Costa Rica or the Americans. Both have looked strong during the 2019 Gold Cup. Costa Rica has played very well while the U.S. appears to be rounding into their best form.

Wimbledon Starts on July 1

Wimbledon, the third major tennis tournament of the year, starts this coming Monday on July 1. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic is a huge +150 favorite. Roger Federer is second choice at +350 while Rafael Nadal, the French Open winner, is the third choice at +550.

On the women’s side, Serena is favored at +550, Ashleigh Barty is second choice at +600, and Naomi Osaka is third choice at +800. We’ll post Wimbledon blogs later in the week.

Hughes Goes First Overall in NHL Draft

The New Jersey Devils selected 18-year-old Jack Hughes with the first pick in the NHL Draft. Hughes scored 34 goals and had 78 assists in 50 games for the USA Under-18 team. After the Devils drafted Hughes, the New York Rangers drafted Kaapo Kakko.

Kakko has more size than Hughes. Both should play in the NHL next season, which is a big deal. In hockey, like in baseball, it can take a player a couple of years to be ready for the highest-level. Kakko and Hughes are both ready right now.

New Orleans Pelicans Win NBA Draft

The NBA draft was all about Zion Williamson and, as to be expected, the New Orleans Pelicans took the most hyped player to enter the NBA Draft since LeBron James with the first pick.

Drafting Zion first isn’t what was really interesting. What was really interesting was what New Orleans’ GM David Griffin said about drafting Zion first. Griffin said that Zion isn’t the savior of the franchise. Sounds crazy, right?

Then again, New Orleans didn’t just better itself by drafting Zion Williamson last Thursday. In Round 1, they also drafted Texas center Jaxson Hayes and Brazilian professional league hoops player Marcos Louzada Silva. Silva has some serious hops. He’s a 20-year-old basketball star in his native Brazil. Don’t be surprised if both Silva and Williamson start.

NBA Free Agency is When the Fun Starts

It didn’t take long for the NBA to switch gears from the draft to free agency. It makes sense because this free agency is ridiculously deep.

Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Kyrie Irving can all sign player options to remain with their current teams. Only Kawhi might do that. Kyrie and KD are most likely finding new addresses. Even if all three sign player options, check out the rest of the players on the list:

Kemba Walker

Jimmy Butler

D’Angelo Russell

Klay Thompson

Khris Middleton

Tobias Harris

Kristaps Porzingis

Nikola Vucevic

DeMarcus Cousins

Julius Randle

Al Horford

Those are just some of the names. DeAndre Jordan, Paul Milsap, and Marc Gasol are also free agents. NBA Free Agency opens at 6:00 pm ET on June 30. It’s going to change a lot of teams.

Have a great week!
