The NFL is Back!

This weekend is the weekend that NFL fans have waited months for! The NFL is back!  There are some big games on the opening week’s docket. We’ll have an AFC West showdown between potential playoff teams, as the Las Vegas Raiders head to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers. Justin Herbert is one of the top quarterbacks in the game, and he should have a high-powered offense in Los Angeles.

Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs will take on Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals made the playoffs last season, and should be in contention for a playoff spot once again this season. Patrick Mahomes will be without Tyreek Hill for the first time in his career, so we’ll see how that affects the Chiefs high-scoring offense.

Tom Brady continues to defy Father Time. He and his Buccaneers will head to Dallas to take on the Cowboys. Dallas has had some injury issues in camp, and their offensive line isn’t as strong as it once was. We’ll see if Brady can still play, or if time starts taking a toll on his body.

The Chase for the Playoffs

As the baseball season enters the stretch run, teams that are in the chase for a playoff spot know that every game is crucial. In looking at this weekend’s schedule, we have some key games with playoff implications.

Heading into Thursday night’s action, the Cleveland Guardians hold a two-game lead over the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins for the lead in the American league Central. The Guardians travel to Minnesota for a huge weekend series. Cleveland could extend their lead, or the Twins could be in 1st place after the weekend.

The New York Yankees have seen their double-digit game lead shrink to just five games heading into their weekend series at Tampa. The Rays are currently in second place, and are looking to be the benefactors of a historic crash by the Yankees. The Rays will see the tail end of the New York rotation, so they could gain some ground on the Bronx Bombers.

College Football

The big game of the weekend will take place in Austin, Texas, as Nick Saban and his top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will take on the Texas Longhorns. Steve Sarkisian, the former Alabama assistant, will meet Saban for the first time. Sarkisian is coming off of a disappointing 2021 season. Between raiding the transfer portal, and getting some big recruits to come to Texas, Sarkisian has built the Texas squad into a good team. We’ll see how they handle an Alabama team that is phenomenal on both sides of the ball.
