Top Sports Events for This Weekend – July 9 – July 10

Major League Baseball

One of the most heated rivalries in baseball is being played out this weekend, as the New York Yankees will travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox. The Yankees won the first game of their four-game series on Thursday night. With the Yankees win, their lead in the division is now 14.5 games over Tampa Bay. With the loss, the Red Sox are now in a tie for third place in the division.

While the Yankees are running away with the division, the Red Sox are in a three-way battle for second place. If the season ended tomorrow, four teams from the AL East would make the playoffs. However, the Rays, Red Sox, and Blue jays are in a fight for playoff positioning, and none of them think that the divisional race is over.

As always, when these two teams get together, there’s sure to be some fireworks.

PGA Tour

While the Barbasol Championship is being played stateside, many of the world’s top golfers have already crossed the pond and are playing in the Genesis Scottish Open. Jordan Spieth, Ricky Fowler, Patrick Cantlay, Gary Woodland, Max Homa, Will Zalatoris, and Xander Shauffele are some of the top names in the field.

The Scottish Open is a warm-up event for next weekend’s fourth and final major of the season, the British Open. Tiger Woods has stated that he’ll be playing, and anytime he’s in the field, all eyes will be on that event. We’ll also be anxious to see if one of the world’s top golfers will claim the final major, or if a relatively unknown player steps up and makes a name for himself.

Tennis

Arguably the most famous tennis tournament in the world will end this weekend, as the Men’s and Women’s Finals will be played. Rafael Nadal withdrew from his semifinal match with an injury. The fiery Australian, Nick Kyrgios, will await the winner of the other men’s semifinal which will feature the world’s top player, Novak Djokovic, taking on Cameron Norrie. Norrie, who is from the UK, will have the home crowd firmly behind him, so it should be a great atmosphere.

WNBA

The WNBA has been gaining popularity over the past few years, and one of their main attractions, the WNBA All Star Game will take place this Sunday in Chicago. Brianna Stewart will captain Team Stewart, against A’ja Wilson’s Team Wilson. We’ll get to see some of the best female basketball players in the world lace them up. This is always a fun event to watch.
