Weekly Sports Recap & Update – July 1st Edition

Now that the NBA playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals are both done and over with, Major League Baseball is the only major sport being played.

We have some big series coming up this weekend between potential playoff teams, and the NBA Free Agency period has begun, so we will see a lot of player movement this weekend.

We can’t forget the NASCAR series events and UFC 276. Let’s take a look at some of the top sporting events of the upcoming 4th of July weekend.

Top Sports Events for This Weekend – July 2 – July 3

Major League Baseball Action

We have a lot of potential playoff matchups taking place in Major League Baseball this weekend. In the National League West, the top two teams will collide, as the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers and Padres have been battling for the top spot in the West for the past few weeks. Los Angeles currently holds a 1.5-game lead over the Padres.

Two American League division leaders will square off this weekend as well, as the New York Yankees will face the Cleveland Guardians. The Yankees have a massive lead in the East, while the Guardians are fighting to hold off the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox.

Another big matchup in the American League will have the Toronto Blue Jays tangling with the Tampa Bay Rays. If the season ended tomorrow, both the Blue Jays and Rays would be playoff teams despite currently sitting in third and fourth place in the American League East.

NBA

Even though there isn’t any game action at this time, Free Agency began on Thursday, and it’s already been a crazy time. We have seen a lot of signings, including Jalen Brunson to the Knicks, but the biggest news isn’t about a free agent.

The biggest news coming from the NBA is Kevin Durant asking the Nets to trade him. We could see a lot of scenarios unfold this weekend, and KD could have a new home. It should be a fun weekend of watching NBA moves!

UFC 276

The UFC 276 card is loaded. The main event of the evening is for the UFC Middleweight Championship, as the champion Israel Adesanya will take on Jared Cannonier.

Adesanya could be pound for pound the best fighter in the world. He’s a huge favorite to defiant Cannonier.

In the co-main event of the evening, the UFC Featherweight Championship will be on the line, as the champion, Alexander Volkanovski, will defend his title against UFC veteran Max “Blessed” Holloway. This one should be a fun one to watch, as Volkanovski hasn’t been challenged by anyone for a long period of time.

NASCAR

It’s a road course weekend as the NASCAR Series heads to Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. On Saturday, the Xfinity Series will run in the Henry 180. On Sunday, the Cup Series will run in the Kwik Trip 250.

Coming off of a big win last weekend, Chase Elliott is the favorite to take home the checkered flag on Sunday. Kyle Larson, who has had a tremendous season, is also one of the top favorites to win.
