2019 NFL Draft Recap, NBA Playoffs and Stanley Cup Playoffs & Kentucky Derby

No NFL betting season? No worries! The NFL grabbed headlines last week by showcasing the newest group of future gridiron stars in their yearly NFL Draft. Outside the NFL, both the NHL and NBA continue their exciting playoffs and, guess what? It’s Kentucky Derby Week!

NFL Draft grabs top ratings

No matter what the NBA, the NHL, or Major League Baseball will ever do, the NFL is king when it comes to television. ABC, which is owned by Disney, decided to broadcast Thursday’s NFL Draft. The daft was also on ESPN and ESPN 2. Look what happened?

The draft delivered such great ratings that it beat out the Big Bang Theory on CBS. That tells us that no matter what anybody says, the NFL still rules.

As far as the actual draft was concerned, the Arizona Cardinals didn’t fool anybody by taking Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray first. The Cardinals traded last year’s starter and first round pick, Josh Rosen, to the Miami Dolphins.

The Cardinals and Dolphins both did well, but the big winner in this year’s NFL Draft were the Jacksonville Jaguars. Edge rusher Josh Allen, perhaps the best overall player in the draft, fell to the Jags in the first round. In the second round, Jacksonville landed the consensus best offensive tackle in the draft, Florida’s Jawaan Taylor.

With Allen, Taylor, and new quarterback Nick Foles, the Jaguars have become, yes, instant Super Bowl contenders. Let’s not forget that they barely lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship a couple of seasons ago.

There’s Nothing Like the NHL Playoffs

Unlike the NBA, where only a handful of teams dominate, the NHL Playoffs is about true parity. Any team that makes the postseason in ice hockey can win the Stanley Cup. That’s always been the case. This season that’s really the case.

Entering the playoffs, the Tampa Bay Lightning had so thoroughly dominated during the regular season that they were +250 favorites to win the Cup. Columbus, the 4-seed in Tampa’s bracket, mustn’t have gotten the memo because they swept the Lightning into the offseason.

But, Tampa’s not the only 1-seed to have gotten bounced in Round 1. In fact, the NHL Playoffs no longer showcases a 1-seed after the Nashville Predators lost to the Dallas Stars, the Calgary Flames lost to the Colorado Avalanche, and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals fell to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Even if you don’t like hockey, you must appreciate how the NHL has the most competitive postseason of the four major sports. Check out a game. You never know. You might become a hockey fan.

Dogs cashing in the NBA Playoffs

Although the NBA Playoff has a reputation for rewarding favorite bettors, that reputation has been sunk this postseason. The Golden State Warriors struggled to get out of their Round 1 battle with the L.A. Clippers. It took the Warriors 6 games to get past the Clippers.

Golden State did beat the Houston Rockets 104-100 in their Game 1 in the second round, though. Game 2 is on Tuesday night. Make sure to check it out. We know James Harden and Chris Paul will come out firing.

Also on Tuesday night is a great Game 2 matchup in the Eastern Conference between the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks. Boston turned it on in Game 1, destroying the Greek Freak and the rest of the Bucks 112-90. Milwaukee should lean on Giannis much more in Game 2.  Not only that, but Milwaukee will change their defense to prevent so many Celtic monster dunks like what Boston had in Game 1.

Toronto had their way with the Philadelphia 76ers in their first game. The Raptors look like the much better team in that matchup while Portland and Denver tip off their series on Monday night.

Damian Lillard has already shown why some consider him the best point-guard in the NBA. He led the Oklahoma City spanking in the first round and will look to do the same to Denver by dominating the Nuggets’ backcourt of Jamal Murray and Gary Harris. But, Denver might have the most talented player in this series in big man Nikola Jokic.

Although Warriors-Rockets and Celtics-Bucks are must watch television, don’t forget about Nuggets-Trail Blazers. That’s going to be just as exciting as Steph versus The Beard and Giannis taking on Boston.

A dark horse could break the favorites’ streak in the Kentucky Derby

Favorites have won the last 6runnings of America’s most famous horse race, the Kentucky Derby. Orb took it in 2013, followed by California Chrome in 2014 and American Pharoah in 2015. In 2016, Nyquist, named after current San Jose Sharks player Gustav Nyquist, won the Derby as the chalk. 2017’s Derby went to Always Dreaming while Justify dominated the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

Even though the chalk has raced great at Churchill Downs the past 6 years, don’t rush to your MyBoookie account and dump on this year’s chalk, the Bob Baffert trained and Santa Anita Derby winner Roadster.

Roadster is at +500 to beat Omaha Beach at +550. That means Roadster is a lukewarm Derby favorite at best. Not only that, but 6 horses offer odds of +1000 or less in the MyBookie Kentucky Derby Futures: Roadster, Omaha Beach, Game Winner +700, Improbable +900, Maximum Security +1000, and Tacitus +1000.

There’s a chance this year’s Derby is won by an underdog horse. It might not be a Mine That Bird type winner, who paid over $100 for a $2 win bet back in 2009, but it could be a runner like Maximum Security, Tacitus, Vekoma at +1300, or even a horse like Spinoff at +2500.

No matter what you do, make sure to put a few bucks on a Derby horse. It’s an American tradition and you never know. You could hit the massive win mutuel and cash big time!
